Zeenatu Adams visits South Africa

This month we feature a report by Zeenatu Adams of Blue Skies Ghaaa who recently travelled to South Afria to carry out some training for the technical team.

My trip to blueskies South Africa was exciting. One captivating scene when I landed in South Africa is the OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg. It is big and really beautiful. Unfortunately for me at the Airport it took me over 30 minutes to locate my luggage because I was directed to the wrong terminal!

Sonette, the Blue Skies SA Technical Manager who was waiting to pick me up to the guest house actually thought I had gone missing.

I was hosted in a beautiful guest house and served with an unfamiliar meal for dinner. The weather was quite cold on the first night. Thank God for the two big thick blankets, I survived! The weather on subsequent nights was less cold.

The BS South Africa team (Justice, Lucia, China, David, Lindiwe and Flata) were pleased to meet me and gave me a warm welcome on arrival to the factory. I had a quick factory tour with Lucia (assistant technical manager) as I observed their label and dispatch Label HACCP system. I noticed that they had a similar process flow as we have here in Ghana. Their new factory 2 is awesome.

I was also enlightened by the products they make at Factory one. I was pleased to know we make such delectable fruit juices for top industries.

The following day I had a short discussion with Magdalene (label HACCP leader and internal Auditor) concerning the main reason for my visit as well as the observations I made during the factory tour with Lucia. Later in the day I did the label and dispatch HACCP training for all technical staff responsible for handling labels. The training was interactive and successful. SA Blue Skies team is already doing a fantastic job with regards to LABEL CCP. However I believe the other inputs from Ghana which I mentioned at the training when implemented will give them an excellent LABEL HACCP system.

I was also pleased to meet Andre (SA GM), Hella and Richard (Waitrose auditors), John, Riana, Waydu, as well as other staff in SA. All of the staff were very enthusiastic about the job and were eager to know about what happens in Ghana as well.

During the last days of my visit I was privileged to dine at the breathtaking Montecasino, one of South Africa’s top entertainment complexes, which has been designed like an Italian village and covers 26 hectares of land. I was also honoured to visit two of SA Blue Skies Foundation projects in Balfour. Andre , Waydu and team  were impacting the schools and community massively by providing assistance to the school canteen and computer laboratory.
