Blue Skies is a family built upon a culture of fairness, trust and mutual respect. We believe that care for people breeds care for fruit which in turn fosters a natural concern for the environment. By nurturing our culture and working together as a family we have become a role model for ethical development and won a ‘Queen’s Award for Enterprise’ for our approach to sustainability.
Our approach is to ‘add value at source’ which means cutting the fruit where it is grown, rather than taking away the raw materials and processing it else where. This not only brings significant social and economic benefits to the country of origin but also enables us to supply fruits that are 'fresh from harvest'.
We always work closely with our farmers and provide continuous training and support so that they are able reach high ethical, environmental and agricultural standards. We also help local communities by funding social projects where there is a need and donating to local schools and organisations. While we aim to ensure that all our products are traded fairly, we also support established schemes such as Fairtrade which helps to give producers in the developing world a better deal.
At Blue Skies we respect and trust one another. We value our people and listen to each other’s ideas. At each of our locations we aim to look after our staff according to the needs of the society. In Ghana for instance we provide free health care at our clinic and access to information via our library and internet café. There’s also a subsidised canteen which provides quality meals throughout the day and a free bus service that takes staff to and from work.
Our respect for people extends to respect for the environment. At Blue Skies we’re by no means perfect but we’re determined to act responsibly. We are continually assessing the emissions at every stage of our operations with the aim of reducing our impact on the environment where-ever possible. We are looking into new technologies such as compostable packaging, renewable energy and bio fuels, and we continue to ensure that we make no compromise on quality and freshness so that when our fruit finally reaches our customers, none of it is unnecessarily wasted.
Finally we continue to invest in environmental projects in the countries where we operate. These currently include land and forest conservation, re-forestation and composting. You can download a copy of our first sustainability report by clicking here.
